I was walking the Provo River Trail, a hidden section that runs behind the houses, the kind of path most people never find. The summer rains had just fallen, and I could still hear them, raindrops landing on the leaves somewhere up ahead. My whole body lit up with that smell of wet, fresh earth after the scorching heat.

As I walked, I was speaking softly into my phone, recording a voice note the way I often do. It is an easy, honest way to process out loud, for my ears only. That day I was talking through a one year training program I was curious about. The steps were beginning to come together, but it was not yet a full body, 100 percent “H-E-double-hockey-sticks, YA” kind of yes.

And then I said it out loud. “I am feeling more and more calm that the universe will provide for me and my kids while I dedicate a year to this program.”

The snake began to slither out right then. At the exact moment those words left my mouth.

The moment the whole trail went still

A small wandering garter snake, out enjoying the same rain I was. It moved in that beautiful lace motion across the path, and when it reached the grass on the other side, it paused. For a moment neither of us moved, and the whole trail went quiet, the way a room goes still right before something true is spoken.

The first thing I felt was the jump, that wave of shock. Then I checked its markings, making sure it was a safe snake. The moment I saw it was the gentle, harmless kind, my breath finally dropped all the way down to my wet feet. And once I knew I was safe, the amazement came rushing in.

I stood there and stared into the eyes of this snake, and we communed. I could not have taken another step forward without walking right onto it. It had placed itself exactly in my path, in the exact moment I was asking my question out loud. I quietly thanked it for showing up for me so directly.

What a snake knows about becoming

A snake never sheds into nothing. Long before it lets the old skin go, it has already grown the new one underneath, soft and waiting. It only releases what it is wearing once what comes next is fully formed.

And there I was, asking whether it was time to shed an old version of myself and step onto a very new path. Whether it was time to become the woman, the leader, I could feel myself growing into.

I stared a little longer, and everything went still, and I felt like the snake was nodding. A quiet approval. Yes. It is time to shed this skin of who you believe you are, and let the next version of you come forward.

The answer had crossed my path in the rain. So clearly, so undeniably.

I kept walking, and the tears came. I looked up at the sky and laughed, pure amazement at this magical world we get to live in and dance through.

This is what the animals do for us

When an animal crosses your path at the exact moment you are asking a real question, it is not random. It is an answer arriving in a language older than words, the living world meeting your body where it already knows the truth.

Sometimes a guide crosses your actual path on a trail. Sometimes one comes to meet you in a quiet moment, in a dream, in a song, in a card you draw. The invitation is always the same. Sit with it for a few days, and notice what it stirs.

If you are curious which animal is walking with you right now, I made something for that. You can meet your animal guide here, a short, soulful quiz that reveals the one calling you forward in this season.

You already know what it is time to shed

Your body knew the answer before the snake ever crossed. The animals do not tell us anything new. They come to confirm the truth we are already carrying, and to give us the courage to trust it.

Questions people ask

What does the snake symbolize as an animal ally? Snake carries the medicine of shedding and renewal. She is the part of you ready to release an old skin, an old identity, a way of surviving that no longer fits, and to trust that a truer self is already there beneath it, soft and waiting.

What does it mean when a snake crosses your path? In many traditions it is a sign of transformation, a quiet nudge that it is time to let something go. For me, it came as a yes at the exact moment I was deciding whether to step into a new life. A snake never sheds into nothing. The next version of you is already forming.

A gentle note: I am a somatic and energy practitioner, not a licensed therapist. This work walks alongside healing and growth. It is not a replacement for therapy or medical care, and many of the people I sit with do both. That is a good and beautiful thing.

If something in you leaned in as you read this, there is a soft place to begin. This kind of listening, to your body, to the living world, to what is ready to shed, is the heart of the work I do with people. It can start gently, with a free discovery call, twenty unhurried minutes, no pressure and nothing to sell, just space to be heard.

The snake did not hesitate. When it was time, it crossed. When it is your time, you will know.
